The Employers’ Liability
Tracing Office (ELTO)
What is the Employers’ Liability
Tracing Office?
The ELTO service has been introduced by the insurance industry to make it easier to search for Employer Liability (EL) insurance policies using a central database - containing all new and renewed EL insurance policies from April 2011, policies from before April 2011 that have new claims made against them and policies that were identified through the previous tracing service.
The Employers' Liability Database (ELD)
To centralise this search and trace function, ELTO have created the Employer’s Liability Database (ELD). It will store certain policy information of all businesses that hold EL insurance.
From April 2012 it will be mandatory to provide your Employer Reference Number (ERN) when you purchase Employer Liability Insurance, from any company in the UK.
Why does this mean to you?
If you employ staff, UK law states that you must have Employer Liability Insurance. The new regulations say that when you buy your EL insurance, you will need to provide us with these two additional pieces of information:
• details of any subsidiaries insured under your policy
• your Employers' Reference Number (ERN) for both the
• policyholder and any subsidiary company insured by the same
• policy.
The ERN is the PAYE tax code given to a company as a reference number for their employees’ income tax and national insurance contributions. Subsidiary companies may have the same ERN as the parent or may have a separate ERN in their own right.
A small number of businesses may be exempt from holding an ERN. This will generally be only in cases where the employer pays their staff less than £503 per month, per employee.
Please be sure to have your ERN to hand when quoting for a policy. We will also need this information if you are an existing customer whose policy renews on or after 1st April 2012.
